Slaves, Pharaoh, and Redemption | Bible Bible Words, pt. 4
Episode 77
Redemption.
In church circles, we read that word in the Bible or we sing about it in songs on Sunday.
What does it mean?
In sports, we say things like "this is a redemption game" for this team (almost like revenge or getting even).
In the realm of shopping, we talk about "redeeming this coupon."
But those meanings of the word are very different than how the Bible uses it.
So what does the Bible mean by the word "redemption"? Well it has a lot to do with slaves and pharaoh ... and even lambs.
In this episode, John explores the way the word was used on the street in Paul and Peter's day and the theological background that shaped how those two apostles understood the word.
Bible verses referenced in this episode:
Romans 3:23-24
"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;"
1 Peter 1:18-19
"knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ."
Exodus 6:6-7
Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians
Exodus 15:13
In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed; n your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling.
